Breast Revision

With Dr. Mark Kohout

WHY YOU MAY CONSIDER BREAST

REVISION

If a previous breast augmentation has turned out to be not all you hoped for, breast implant replacement surgery could give you the look you desire.

Breast augmentation revision surgery can also fix problems due to complications from your original breast augmentation procedure. And you have options to reduce or increase the size of breast implants and get a different type of implant.

Implant revision procedures at Dr Mark Kohout’s cosmetic breast surgery clinic in Sydney have helped many women to regain their youthful breast contour and appearance and improve breast symmetry.

Reasons to Change Breast Implants

Even if your initial breast implant surgery was well planned and performed, changes can occur over time. For instance, the shape and size of your breasts can be adversely affected by:

  • Gravity: both the implants and your breast tissue can drop over time. The larger the implants, the faster the drop.
  • Ageing.
  • Scarring around the implants: capsular contracture. This can produce visible distortion or unevenness. Severe contracture can also cause pain or discomfort.
  • Pregnancy and/or Breastfeeding.
  • Weight gain or loss.

Is Breast Implant Revision Surgery

Right for Me?

Many women who opt for breast implant replacement surgery have become disappointed with the results of their original procedure in terms of shape, size and overall look and feel of their breasts.

Good candidates for breast implant revision are usually non-smokers with no active medical condition, and whose weight is healthy and stable. They also have positive but realistic expectations about a change in breast implants.

And if you’re thinking about losing a lot of weight, Dr Kohout may advise weight stabilisation before your Sydney breast implant revision.

Implant Rupture and Capsular Contracture

You’ll need an implant revision procedure if you’ve experienced an implant rupture or capsular contracture.

Eventually, all implants will fail and leak or rupture. This can be as short as 5 years, or as long as 30 years.

It’s normal for the body to form a capsule – a soft layer of scar tissue – around a breast implant, which it regards as a foreign body.

Capsular contracture occurs when the capsule becomes thickened or inflamed and the scar tissue begins to contract. Left untreated, this can result in pain, increasing hardening of the breast, and even deformity.

What to Expect from Breast Implant

Replacement

A variety of techniques may be used in breast implant replacement surgery to reshape or redesign breasts or change the size of breast implants. Replacing your breast implants will be similar to your initial procedure. However, there may be additional challenges.

Breast augmentation revision surgery is usually more difficult than the original procedure because your breast surgeon is working on areas where scarring is present and tissue has already been altered or removed, which can make implant revision more complex.

Sydney breast implant revision of breast augmentation typically takes from 1.5 to 2.5 hours and is performed with general anaesthesia. The previous incisions are generally used to remove the original implant but new incisions may be necessary.

You should be able to return home the same day as the surgery or the following day but you’ll need to keep the implant area dry for a week and avoid strenuous exercise. Many patients at Dr Kohout’s breast implant revision Sydney clinic find that the healing process is more comfortable than recovery after the original surgery.

If you’re getting replacement implants because of capsular contracture, changing the breast implants will be a longer, more complicated procedure because part of, or even the complete capsule, needs to be removed.

Breast Implant Revision Combined

with Breast Lift

A change of breast implants and having a breast lift are two different procedures that can be combined to make breasts firmer and more youthful.

If your breasts are sagging, Dr Kohout may recommend a breast lift in conjunction with your Sydney breast implant revision. A breast lift (mastopexy) may be necessary alongside breast augmentation revision surgery because implants can alter the shape of your breasts over time, especially with larger implants.

A lift will also allow the reshaping of skin and other surrounding tissue to create the perfect framework to support the new implants.

A mastopexy to restore the position and contours of your breast tissue is more likely to be needed if you’ve chosen not to have your implants replaced or if you don’t want to increase the size of your breast implants – the resulting loose breast tissue after implant removal may need tightening to optimise breast shape. If you need both an implant revision and a breast lift, combining the procedures offers many benefits, such as:

  • Saving you time and money.
  • Fewer incisions and scars.
  • Less downtime by recovering from both procedures together.
  • Combining revision breast implant surgery with a breast lift is common after pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight loss.
